5 reasons why joint mobility is important

Joint mobility is defined as an individuals ability to control their limbs through a full range of motion without restriction.

The importance of your mobility cannot be understated. Good mobility can make a big difference to all areas of your life, but it needs to be done with control. If it is it will help you move smoothly, and efficiently, through various movement patterns and activities. So whether you are a high-performance athlete or an office worker, there is a huge benefit to be gained by working on your mobility, if not just for your overall health and well-being.

Everyone likes a list so here’s my top 5 reasons why joint mobility is so important and why you shouldn’t neglect it.

1. REDUCES THE RISK OF INJURY

When your joints can move through their full range of motion, it means that the surrounding muscles, ligaments, and tendons are also able to move freely, which reduces the risk of strains, sprains, and other injuries.

2. PREVENTS JOINT PAIN AND STIFFNESS

When joints become stiff and immobile, it can lead to massive amounts of pain and discomfort. Worse case scenario; injury. Maintaining good joint mobility helps to keep the joints flexible, lubricated, and pain free.

3. HELPS WITH POSTURE AND BALANCE

When your body is able to move well, you will naturally have better alignment and a much greater range of movement. Having the mobility to be able to move well will help you develop the ability to control your balance whilst you are moving. Your posture and balance are a key part to living a healthy and safe life.

4. IMPROVES ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE

When you have good joint mobility you will be able to control your movement better, and with greater ease. This will help you perform better in your chosen sport. You will be a free moving athlete rather than one who is fighting against their own bodies restrictions, as well as your opponents will to win.

5. ENHANCES QUALITY OF LIFE

Poor mobility will have an impact on your quality of life as you will be less able to do the things you used to do, or want to do. Simple activities such as bending, reaching, and twisting become easier when your joints can move freely. Developing and improving your mobility will enable you to live independently and stay physically fit for longer.

If you take your training seriously, working on your joint mobility should be a top priority. If you are an athlete with poor movement you simply won’t be as effective as you could, and should be. Whether you want to reach your full athletic potential, or just want to live a better quality of life, your joint mobility is going to play a key role in your success.
